Is Virtual Care Right for You?

This service exists for one reason: too many Alabama patients live far from a physical therapist with real experience in pelvic health, hypermobility, POTS, or menopause-related symptoms. If that's you, virtual care can close the gap.

This may be a good fit if you:

  • Live in a rural or underserved area of Alabama without a local pelvic floor specialist
  • Have limited transportation, mobility restrictions, or a demanding schedule that makes regular in-person visits difficult
  • Have already had an in-person pelvic floor evaluation and need ongoing coaching, exercise progression, or symptom management
  • Are managing hypermobility/EDS, POTS, or menopausal symptoms and need specialized guidance not available where you live

This is probably not the right fit if you:

  • Live in the Hoover/Birmingham area — we'd love to see you in person, where a full hands-on evaluation is possible
  • Have never had a pelvic floor evaluation and your symptoms suggest an internal assessment is needed first
  • Are experiencing new, severe, or rapidly worsening symptoms that warrant an in-person or urgent medical evaluation

What a Virtual Visit Can Include

Virtual sessions focus on the parts of pelvic floor and women's health care that translate well to video — not a lesser version of care, but a different toolkit suited to remote delivery:

  • 360°/diaphragmatic breathing retraining and core coordination
  • Individualized exercise programming and form review via video
  • Bladder and bowel retraining strategies
  • Hypermobility/EDS movement pacing and joint protection strategies
  • POTS-informed graded exercise and activity pacing
  • Menopause and hormone-related symptom coaching, drawing on the Thrive Through Menopause framework
  • Home program design, progression, and accountability follow-up
What virtual care cannot include: internal pelvic floor assessment and hands-on manual therapy require an in-person visit. If your situation calls for these, we'll discuss options for an initial in-person evaluation or a referral to a qualified provider closer to you.

How It Works

Step 1

Complete the virtual care intake form, which confirms Alabama residency and helps us understand your access to local care.

Step 2

We review your intake to confirm virtual care is appropriate for your symptoms, or recommend an in-person visit or local referral if it isn't.

Step 3

You'll sign a telehealth consent form and receive a link to your secure video visit.

Step 4

Your first virtual session includes a full history, movement and breathing assessment, and the start of your individualized plan of care.

Step 5

Follow-up sessions build on your home program with progression, troubleshooting, and ongoing coaching.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is virtual pelvic floor physical therapy covered by insurance?

Sharp Ortho & Pelvic Physical Therapy is a cash-pay practice for both in-person and virtual visits. We can provide a superbill upon request so you may seek reimbursement from your insurance carrier for out-of-network telehealth services, but coverage and reimbursement depend on your individual plan.

Who is virtual physical therapy for?

Alabama residents who do not have reasonable local access to a pelvic floor or women's health specialized physical therapist — including patients in rural counties, those with limited transportation, or those unable to find a local provider experienced with hypermobility, EDS, POTS, or menopause-related pelvic health concerns.

Can pelvic floor issues be treated virtually?

Many components translate well to virtual visits — breathing mechanics, exercise progression, bladder and bowel retraining, posture and movement coaching, and symptom management education. Internal assessment and hands-on manual therapy cannot be performed virtually. Some patients benefit from a hybrid approach: an in-person evaluation followed by virtual follow-up.

Do I need a physician referral for virtual physical therapy in Alabama?

Alabama allows direct access to physical therapy under certain conditions. During intake, we'll review your history to determine whether a referral applies to your situation.

What do I need for a virtual visit?

A private space, a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and ideally some open floor space or a mirror for movement assessment.

Is virtual care only available to patients outside the Birmingham area?

Virtual care is intended for Alabama patients who lack reasonable local access to specialized pelvic floor or women's health physical therapy. Patients in the Hoover/Birmingham area are encouraged to schedule in-person visits, where a full evaluation including manual therapy is available.
